WHOIS and RDAP are protocols used to retrieve domain registration data. While they serve the same purpose, they differ significantly in their technical implementation.
WHOIS is an older, text-based protocol without a consistent data standard. RDAP was introduced to overcome these limitations and is built on modern web technologies such as HTTP(S) and JSON. As a result, an RDAP lookup returns structured responses that are easier to interpret and process.
RDAP is considered the modern successor to WHOIS because it offers standardized data formats, improved security, and better support for privacy and access control.
INWX usually displays lookup results via WHOIS, with RDAP used when WHOIS data is not available.
